Lift the cancellation of the Global Summit on Human Rights in the Digital Age
By Kellys Kaunda
The Zambian government has cited security concerns and the need to ensure the conference aligned with national priorities as reasons for the cancelation of the 2026 edition of the global conference on human rights in the digital age.
For starters, the Zambian government has the right to do what it did for the reasons it has advanced.
Similarly, the Zambian people have the right to oppose the cancelation and the reasons advanced for its cancelation.
The Zambian government must be ready for all manner of speculation, inuendos and questions.
For instance, the last conference of this kind on the African continent was in Tunis in 2019. Since then, there have been demands and bids by different African countries to host the prestigious event.
And Zambia finally won the bid to host the event whose preparations began last year in earnest when topics were proposed and the process of picking speakers began.
On 3rd March 2026, last month, the organizers paid a courtesy call on Permanent Secretary Brilliant Habeenzu of the Ministry of Technology and Science.
In no uncertain terms, Dr. Habeenzu confirmed the conference’s “alignment with Zambia’s national development agenda”, according to a story on the official page of the Ministry.
The story further quotes Eng. Habeenzu as saying “the Eighth National Development Plan highlights economic transformation and job creation as a key pillar, driven by sectors such as tourism, manufacturing, mining and agriculture. Conferences of this magnitude, he observed, significantly contribute to the tourism sector and enhance Zambia’s international visibility”.
Now, between the 3rd of March and now, how did this conference suddenly did not align with the national development agenda?
For a country with a full-fledged Ministry of Technology and Science, what security challenges could possibly be posed by conference speakers?
Is it because the concept of securitization is foreign to majority Zambians so you are using it to sweep under the carpet your real reasons for canceling the event?
For your own information, during a similar conference in Costa Rica in 2023, a lot of African delegates couldn’t attend in person due to visa complications.
Zambia was picked because more than 160 countries of the world do not have visa complications to visit Zambia!
Here is why Zambia was picked.
“In recent years, the government of Zambia has made significant strides in enhancing the country’s digital economy, with investments in expanded connectivity, digital literacy, and digitized delivery of public services, positioning the country as a regional hub for innovation. Lusaka has also become a focal point for the regional and international digital rights community, having hosted key convenings over the years including Digital Rights and Inclusion Forum (DFRIF), earlier this year, MozFest House in 2024 and Forum on Internet Freedom in Africa (FIFAFRICA) in 2022”.
This is on the website of the conference organizers. This is how they are marketing Zambia to the rest of the world.
And yet, this government is prepared to throw away this reputation, for what?
Yes, some bloggers will highlight what they see as human rights abuses. So what?
You’re not a government of angels. You are sinners like your predecessors. Nothing to be ashamed of.
But you have made strides worth of showcasing. Some of them Eng. Habeenzu highlighted when conference organizers paid a courtesy call on him.
You honestly want to throw away 3000 visitors who are expected to fill our rooms, sample our cuisine and leave behind thousands of dollars we badly need?
For what? Because you are afraid of your own shadows?
Come on guys, get serious. Lift the cancelation and allow the conference to proceed.
